This coffee is one of three Indonesian coffees we're releasing all in one week after having never released one before. We're trying to make up for lost time!

This is one of two coffees we bought from the Koerintji Barokah Bersama Cooperative located in Kerinci, Sumatra. This one is a Natural process. This one probably the bolder of the two with big juicy notes of all those good berries: blueberry, blackberry and raspberry. Just some real nice juicy juice.

The Cooperative has 320 members who live and work on a plateau at the foot of Mount Kerinci. Mount Kerinci is one of 452 volcanoes that make up the Pacific Ring of Fire, the frequent eruptions make for extremely fertile volcanic soil and the growing area is beautiful, lush and extremely biodiverse.

About 50% of the land in the Kerinci region is part of the Kerinci Seblat National Park, so agricultural activity is quite restricted, and potential to expand is quite limited. This has led to amazing innovation in terms of sustainability, and processing. One thing they have done is initiate the 'Payment for Ecosystem Services' or 'PES' in conjunction with Sucafina (who we bought this coffee from) and Rikolto. PES has initiated several projects notably a big compost facility where the co-op can make it's own organic compost to sell and use on their own farms and intercropping avocados for shade.

Rikolto is an NGO that has done a lot of work in the region. In Kerinci they calculated that many farmers were falling short of making incomes that afforded them comfortable lives projects like these marry financial and ecological interests and we're excited to be able to support whilst benefiting from tasty tasty coffee. Here is a link to a video showing more about the project and the amazing work.
