Our first ever Indonesian coffee and what an absolute banger. We're a little late to the party with Indonesian coffee in the last few years more and more amazing producers are doing great things and this last year in particular we've been tasting some exceptionally good coffee from that part of the world.

This coffee comes from Rakyat Farm owned by Aulia Kahpi in Bebesen, Sumatra. Kahpi has a really good reputation for quality and now works with 15 neighbouring small hold farmers (each with on average 0.5 -2.5 hectares)  to process larger volume lots an secure better prices for quality coffee. Kahpi inherited his coffee farm from his parents but his journey to where he today wasn't an easy one, he is very entrepreneurial and his growing network of farmers that he processes with is down to his hard work and collaborative openness. Already an experienced processor, he attended Lucia Solis' first Indonesian fermentation camps last year June '23 along with some other exciting coffee producers who we hope to buy coffees from in the future. Notably Indian specialty visionary, Pranoy Thipaiah, who we visited back in December and will be releasing some coffees from later this year.

Kahpi named this coffee Sesongot after the distinctive caterpillars that can be found hanging from coffee trees on his farm. Apparently the sting of a Sesongot is more painful than a wasp sting and can be life threatening so it is very infamous among coffee farmers in the region as something to look out for when picking. We don't have any good pictures of these spikey badboys that are ours to use but this post has some beautiful photographs:  https://ecency.com/relevant/@roronoa46/terrible-little-caterpillars

Aulia Kahpi uses the name Sesongot for his experimental and special microlots  like this, a nod to the place they come from and the unique beauty of both coffee and caterpillar. This coffee is a blend of varietals: Abyssinia, Ateng, Caturra, Gayo, Timtim and Typica, all grown on Rakyat Farm and surrounding farms at altitudes between 1,300 and 1,600 meters above sea level. We are excited about this coffee and the two other Indonesian releases we've got coming up shortly, it is a region that we've somewhat overlooked in the past and one we're very excited to learn more about!
