We have dual standing policies here at Skylark: first, any coffee that we buy more than 10 sacks of needs to be from an important social or environmental project. And second, we buy at least one sack of any coffee that we cup over 88 points. This dual buying strategy keeps us on the pathway towards being the most ethical coffee company possible, but also keeps us on track towards having the most stunning and diverse coffee offering of any roaster we know.

This incredible coffee is very much from that second category. We've never worked with Clever Neyra before, but this coffee blew us away! With succulent notes of white peach, satsuma, and sun-warmed borage, it's safe to say we're a little obsessed.

We were offered this coffee by our fantastic partners at Falcon. Their work in Peru is extensive and impressive, and every year they introduce us to new farms and coffees that continue to surprise and charm. Their work on the Coffee Carbon Project in Peru has been instrumental in our understanding of farm-side emissions and how to reduce them.

Clever Neyra is a coffee producer at Alto Ihuamaca near the San Ignacio conservation area. He inherited the land from his father, who farmed it for 22 years, then rested the soil for five years before replanting the farm in 2020 with 1,700 Geisha trees and 4,000 Bourbon. With the farm's young trees still increasing in yield year on year, Clever works the farm with help from cousins. After depulping, the cherries ferment for 24–36 hours and are then dried for about 10–12 days.

Clever works with Falcon Coffees Peru (FCP), a company established in 2019 to buy parchment directly at the farm gate, offering quality-differentiated premiums and full financial traceability. In 2022, FCP added cooperative exports to provide reliable access to third-party certified coffees. The company now operates two northern warehouses — Jaén and Moyobamba — with a 20+ person team sourcing and exporting alongside 500+ farmers and eight cooperatives, while their sustainability team runs farmer training and productivity work.
